Firefighters tackle roof blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a roof blaze at a home in Droitwich.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) attended the scene along Hanbury Road just after 5.30am today.

Two fire crews from Droitwich station attended and assessing the seriousness of the incident, requested additional support. An extra pump from Bromsgrove was then dispatched to the address along with a further pump and the aerial ladder platform from Worcester. The Incident Support Unit from Droitwich was also called to assist with the salvage operation while police attended for traffic management.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus tackled the fire with two hose reel jets and water supplemented from the canal using a light portable pump. The height of the aerial ladder platform was used to help remove roof tiles during the incident, and ceilings at the property were also removed to expose the beams to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Station commander Mark Strutt praised fire crews, explaining that their rapid intervention helped restrict the spread of fire. He said: “The fire is believed to have started in a woodburner stove in the house and then spread into the roof space.”

He estimated that around half of the roof was destroyed during the blaze but that damage to the rest of the property had been contained, with only a small part of the first floor affected. No one was injured.
