Triathlon challenge in memory of Droitwich grandmother

THIRTY-one-year-old Laura Woussen will be taking on her first ever triathlon next month to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice following their care of her grandmother.

Joan Thomas, who lived in Droitwich, was cared for until her death at the Worcester hospice last year. She was diagnosed with leukemia about a year before she died, aged 82.

Laura, who grew up in Worcester and now works in London as a magazine designer, will take part in the triathlon in London where she has to swim the Thames then cycle and run her way across the capital.

“I wanted to run for St Richard’s Hospice because although it was a very tough time for everyone, being at the hospice and seeing my grandmother being taken care of so well by such caring and hard-working people made those last days of hers much easier to cope with for everyone.” She added, “It’s hard to believe that they rely almost entirely on donations. Hospices all over the country perform an integral role in society and help to make those last days of life easier on everyone.”

Laura has been training three times a week and has practiced swimming in the sea to get herself ready for the Thames.

To donate to Laura go to http://www.justgiving.com/Laura-Woussen St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,100 patients and family members in Worcestershire.

St Richard’s is grateful for all donations towards the £5m they need to raise this year to continue their work.
