A BIG-HEARTED Droitwich volunteer has been praised with a top county award.

Volunteer driver for Droitwich Community Transport Mike Cusack, who gives up his time to help people who are unable to use public transport or have mobility problems get around, has been awarded a Black Pear Tree Award.

The Black Pear Tree is the symbol of Worcestershire and has been since the 1600s when Queen Elizabeth 1st commanded the fruit be place on Worcestershire's flag.

The awards epitomise the community spirit of the people of Worcestershire.

Mike said: "I was amazed to receive this award as the work that I do is purely voluntary and I get enough reward meetings folks who use the transport.

"I am new to the area and following retirement I needed something to get me up and about. What I do is a small part of the service but a rewarding part nonetheless."

Worcestershire County Council chairman Anne Hingley added: "I was delighted to present the Black Pear Tree Award to Mike. He clearly shows an exemplary commitment in the voluntary sector. Well done Mike and so well deserved."
