NEARLY two weeks after armed officers were sent to Droitwich town centre in response to claims that an armed teenager was walking down the middle of the high street, West Mercia Police have said that its most likely the suspect was actually carrying a tennis racquet.

Investigating officers have been thoroughly examining CCTV images in search of a teenage girl, who was spotted on the High Street at around 6pm on Sunday, July 12 carrying what was believed to be a firearm.

However now, police say they are satisfied they have identified the girl, and what was originally thought to be a firearm, may well have been a tennis racquet.

They offered their thanks to the people of Droitwich for their vigilance during the investigation.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "We can confirm that having carried out a thorough investigation we have not identified anyone carrying a firearm. We did identify someone on CCTV matching the description who was carrying a sports racquet. We can't say definitively that this was the person witnessed but we have not identified anyone else matching the description or anyone carrying a firearm. We have no doubt this report was made out of genuine concern and we thank them for their vigilance."
