MEMBERS of the Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team were out in force with special constables and the Operational Policing Unit over the weekend to conduct further investigations into street racing in Droitwich.

On both Sunday, February 15, and Saturday, February 21 residents near the ‘Big Bear’ island and Westlands Island had reported up to 50 cars taking part in what is known as a ‘car cruise’, blocking the roads, an speeding in a dangerous manner.

Officers attended the scene on both nights, speaking to drivers, and dispersing several people, as well as talking to people who had come to watch rather than take part.

In response to the ‘car cruising’ extra officers will be on patrol in the area over coming weekends to provide reassurance to the public and deal with any illegal or anti-social behaviour.

The operation in the area this weekend did not encounter any large groups of vehicles, although officers stopped and spoke with some drivers.

Sergeant Sarah Kent from the Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Although 'car cruising' isn't illegal and many of the people who take part are sensible and safe drivers, there are often incidents of anti-social or dangerous driving during these gatherings. These drivers put themselves and other road users at risk and this is not acceptable.

“I would urge members of the public to report any information they have about planned car cruises and any incidents they witness to the police on 101 or 999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
