DROITWICH Library is planning a day-long celebration of local history at the end of November, showcasing some of the community’s history organisations, and material available at the library itself.

Visitors will be able to listen to voices from the past, which have been captured as part of the library’s own ‘Our War’ and ‘Our Droitwich’ oral history archives, as well as having the chance to look through local history books, maps, photos and documents in the library.

It is hoped that other community groups will also get involved in the day including the Civic Society, Droitwich Archaeological and History Society, Historic Droitwich and the U3A Local History Group, which is trying to create a living database of local history that people may be able to add to on the day.

Jacqueline Passey, Droitwich Library manager, said: “We hope to make it fun, interactional as well as intergenerational to engage people of all ages to take a greater interest in the history of their local community. There is an abundance of history that a lot of people are totally unaware of and it would be fantastic to raise their awareness and take an active part in keeping it alive.”

The day could also serve as an opportunity for members of the public to bring in their own local history photos, documents and maps for expert local historians to examine, and possibly have them added to the town’s archives.

If the Local History Day proves popular, there are hopes to extend it into becoming an annual event.

More information about the event will be released closer to the date, but people interested in taking part, can speak to staff at Droitwich Library.
