SCHOOLS in Droitwich have been preparing for the introduction of free school meals for all four to seven-year-olds in state primary education across the county from the start of the new school year.
100 per cent of schools are set to provide a healthy meal, with 98 per cent of Worcestershire’s schools providing free hot meals to school children from the start of the autumn term.
The change in legislation should save parents approximately £400 a year for each child in primary education, as well as aiming to ensure all children eat healthily in a bid to improve concentration and performance in the classroom.
Councillor Liz Eyre, cabinet member for children and families, said: "The free school meal scheme is a great incentive for both parents and children. Children are able to take advantage of nutritious meal that will contain all the goodness that they already receive at home with their evening meal. For the parents, there is both a financial saving and a reassurance that their child will be happy and well fed while at school."
