A FAMILY from Droitwich have raised more than £4,300 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research following the death of a loved one.

Grandma and mother, Damayanti Jain passed away last November after suffering from Leukaemia.

Damayanti’s son, Nilesh Jain, 47, said: “She was a very strong character, resilient, she fought what happened to her and never complained. We never knew all that she was going through.

“We were always told it was going to come back, we knew when it did come back it was a matter of time.”

After experiencing the devastating effects of cancer the family decided they wanted to support a charity.

After looking at various organisations which supported those who suffer from Leukaemia they started to think about what they could do to help raise money.

Nilesh said: “My oldest daughter, she was absolutely up for it.”

At first they aimed to raise £2,000 but after reaching their target very early on they decided to increase it to £5,000.

In 2010, they took part in St Richard’s Hospice’s annual Waterways Walk and raised more than £1,000.

The group will now take part in the Thames Path Challenge from Saturday, September 13 to Sunday, September 14.

Nilesh and his brother-in-law Anand Shah, 34, will walk 100km.

Nilesh’s oldest daughter Lakshya, 15, will walk 50km, the maximum allow for her age, his middle daughter Maanvi, 12, will walk 25km, the maximum allowed for her age, and his youngest Karunika aged eight is too little to do the challenge.

However, Karunika has taken part in training by walking 22km. She has also helped make £150 for the charity by asking friends and family to donate.

The team have already raised £4310 towards their target. To donate visit www.leukaemialymphomaresearch.org.uk/jains100k.
