GENEROUS Droitwich townsfolk gave over 1,000 kilos of food in a recent drive to stock up the Droitwich Spa foodbank at the town’s branches of Morrisons and Waitrose.

Volunteers stood outside the two supermarkets, asking shoppers to donate one or two items to help feed local people in crisis.

More than 90 per cent of the food distributed by the foodbank, is donated by members of the public, and the most recent collections brought in 1,200 kg of food, which is enough to feed 60 families.

Droitwich foodbank joint project leader David Stanbury, said: “Droitwich Spa foodbank wants to say a big thank you to all those who gave their food or time. It is hard to describe the difference giving a food parcel makes to parents whose children would otherwise go to bed hungry and it is people like you who make this possible, thank you.”

Co-project leader Graham Wilson, added: “Plans to open the first foodbank in Droitwich Spa, to meet the needs of local people, are well underway, and this amazing total will go a long way towards helping to meet our minimum start-up target of 2 tonnes of food, so we are very grateful to the people of Droitwich for their generosity.”

The Droitwich Spa Foodbank is being set up and run by the nine local churches who make up Churches Together in Droitwich and the surrounding district. It has also received support from the Droitwich Spa Area Partnership, Droitwich Spa Town Council, Wychavon District Council, the Cinnamon Network and Festival Housing.
