A CHRISTMAS tree festival inspired by the Archers beat expectations and raised money for two worthy causes.

The first-time festival was held at St Andrew’s Church, Ombersley, near Worcester, and visitors were invited to bring their own decorated trees as part of a competition with the winner being voted by those attending the festival.

The event raised £1,300 with the majority of the money being used to repair and replace windows in the church.

The rest went to the homeless charity Crisis at Christmas, which provides shelter and meals for rough sleepers.

Fiona Davies, who organised the festival with three friends, said: “We thought only around 20 people would come on the first night but we had more than 50. It’s great that the people of a little village came along and supported their church and the charities.

“The idea came about from listening to the Archers on the radio, and then the four of us thought about putting it together. It’s crucial for the church to receive funds as that’s what it relies on, and for people to receive help when they need it most.”

The winners of the competition, who decorated a tree with photos of lost loved ones, were awarded a cheque of £50 to be donated to a charity of their choice. Also on offer was an organ concert, a raffle, a treasure trail for children, an advent service and craft stalls.
