AN opticians in Droitwich is encouraging the community to get into the festive spirit by collecting present-filled shoeboxes.

Specsavers at St Andrew’s Square, is gathering the shoeboxes until Monday, November 18 on behalf of Samaritan’s Purse as part of Operation Christmas Child.

Gifts such as soft toys, school supplies and toothbrushes and toothpaste are preferred; the filled boxes will then be sent on to underprivileged children across the world.

Steve Perry, store manager at Specsavers in Droitwich, said: “It seems early to be thinking of Christmas but we hope that this gives people time to make donations for children who don’t have much to celebrate over the festive season.

“We’ve supported this initiative by acting as a hub for the charity for a number of years now – and would encourage people to either bring in gift filled boxes or individual items directly to us.”

Customers are asked to determine whether their shoebox is intended for a boy or girl and their age category – two to four-years-old, five to nine, or ten to 14 – which should be made clear on the outside packaging.
