Firefighters to hold another pension strike
12:30pm Friday 11th October 2013 in Local
FIREFIGHTERS are set to strike again - just weeks after they walked out in a row over pensions.
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service has today been informed that members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) will be taking part in industrial action, as the dispute continues.
They will be walking out on Saturday, October 19 between 6.30pm and 11.30pm. Members also walked out last month.
The trade dispute between the Fire Brigades Union and National Government relates to proposed changes to firefighters' pensions.
The fire service said the strike action would result in a significant reduction of the service’s available resources, adding plans were in place to provide appropriate emergency fire cover across the two counties.
The reduced fire cover would include a basic service with the most urgent calls prioritised.
Area Commander Jon Pryce, head of operations for Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: “While the industrial action is ongoing we will still be responding to 999 calls but we will be asking members of the public to take extra steps to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in their home.
“We would ask people to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes as this can provide them with an early warning if a fire should break out in their home. Above all else please remain vigilant.”
