SIR – The important heading ‘Homeless level is far too high in Worcester’ (Worcester News, June 30) deserves a reply.
Leader of Worcester City Council and deputy leader of Worcestershire County Council Simon Geraghty clearly demonstrates where he and fellow Tories sit.
The Welfare Reform Bill being presented by Iain Duncan Smith is a recipe for mass evictions for rent arrears, thereby adding to the homeless.
To consider paying housing benefit directly to the tenants and not the social and housing association landlords beggars belief.
Senior Tories that I have spoken with are aghast at this crazy scheme.
The very idea that some tenants, when sent a monthly gyro including hundreds of pounds rent, would pay their rent first is plain idiotic.
The housing associations are concerned that their cash flow and future as social landlords are threatened by this unworkable Act.
Yes, act against those who are claiming £1,00 and £2,000 housing benefit per week, but don’t bring this plan in, it’s a recipe for a huge disaster.
