SIR – I agree with Peter Nielson’s letter (Worcester News, June 27) concerning social housing in relation to the story about Margaret and Eddie Tout being evicted from their home (Worcester News, June 23).

Ever since the council house sell-off in the 1980s, successive governments have failed to build sufficient social housing for those on low incomes.

Today, with rising unemployment and a dearth of affordable accommodation, the bill for housing benefit is soaring.

However, rather than solving both these problems by investing in the construction of more affordable housing, the Government’s plan is to stop under 25-year-olds claiming housing benefit.

Those under-25s who get on their bike and search for work will be penalised.

The phrase joined up thinking comes to mind.

Maybe the Government should apply it here.
