Wychbold WI
Members turned out in force to attend the March meeting. It was their day - the members' own - when they took over the organising and running of affairs. And what a success they achieved.
Firstly normal WI business was speedily conducted with our president Pat Tonks in the chair. Then the members' own president for the day, Peggy Poultney, took her place, supported by Ann Brown as secretary. Both ladies looked very impressive in their glamorous hats as they presided over the ensuing events.
Roger Green was the guest speaker. He was once a valued member of the well-loved BBC show, The Black & White Minstrels. Roger's reminiscences were happy reminders of the universal appeal that these broadcasts engendered and he paid tribute to the late George Mitchell, who had been their driving force. We were treated to a rendition of I'll See You Again from Noel Coward's Bitter Sweet - Roger's fine singing voice capturing our hearts.
The members then resumed their activities by paying tribute to member Pat Kay on her 90th birthday. A spectacular cake by Pat Tonks, which she had decorated to resemble a cricket pitch, was wheeled in - (Pat K loves the game) - and a Champagne toast was drunk.
And to accompany these delights there was a fashion parade depicting the decades.
Peggy Poultney and Sue Pugh walked the catwalk with the assurance of seasoned models. Did we really look like that in the love, peace and flower-power 60s? Ann Brown had compiled a This is your Life presentation, which she read out to accompany the goings-on on stage.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 14, at 2pm in Wychbold village hall when the guest speaker will be Michael Hall, who will speak on the author Francis Brett Young.
The members competition will be for an old book.
