Salwarpe WI
March winds certainly blew us all to our spring meeting!
Fortunately, the worst of the storms passed us by, but there was plenty to look forward to of a spring-like nature.
We had celebrated our WI birthday with a splendid lunch at The Chateau, and organisers Jenny Williams and Kate Anderson were warmly thanked for their efforts.Consequently next year's 55th birthday lunch was booked on the spot.
Another lunch to look forward to is by invitation from our twin WI, Wythall, who are arranging a walk around Earlswood Lakes in May, with a lunch at a local hostelry.
Food is never too far away from the WI and its concerns and this month it was cherry cake. The recipe used was for the competition in the county spring rally. There were three cakes baked and Sue Longhurst was in charge of cutting and presenting them to be tasted at the end of the evening.
March and April County events were discussed, and items of interest were noted in both our County Newsletter and the National WI Life.
Reports followed from our book club, craft group (UFOs) and skittles team. The quiz team had played their first round and Denise Cotterill reported a mere three point gap between the top team and Salwarpe! We wish them well in the second round.
It was exactly the right time of year to welcome back our speaker, Brian Draper, a Worcestershire man whose knowledge of the highways, byways and waterways of the county and its adjoining shires never ceases to surprise and enthral. We journeyed down the River Severn from Bridgnorth to Bristol, stopping at villages, pubs, churches, bridges and a variety of fascinating riverside features. The time sped by and all too soon we were in Bristol.
Brian then had to choose his favourite competition entry - appropriately a rural photograph. Members choice echoed his, and Fizz Davies, of Churchfields Farm, was the double winner.Cherry cakes were tasted and Beverley Tyler's cake triumphed.
The power of aloe vera will be the subject at out next meeting on April 14. Visitors welcome.
