Cutting the heating bills
HOT STUFF: Joyce Sheppard and her air source heat pump.
HOT STUFF: Joyce Sheppard and her air source heat pump.

JOYCE Sheppard has lived in Himbleton for the past eight years and has struggled to keep her heating bills at a manageable level.

Then, last summer, she was given a lifeline by Festival Housing Group when she was offered a new way of heating her home.

Joyce had been heating her home with LPG gas, but with three price hikes in a year she was desperate to find another way. At the same time, Festival Housing was looking for volunteers to test out new energy saving methods of heating the home.

Joyce said: "Festival Housing explained a couple of different systems that they wanted to try and in the end we decided between us on the air source heat pump (ASHP). This was back in June and lots of work has been done since then."

An air source heat pump takes energy from the air and raises it to a higher temperature in a reverse of the process of a fridge. This new type of pump is considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly ways of heating your home and water.

“LPG gas was very expensive so I thought I would be a volunteer and try something cheaper, not only that but I am doing my bit for the environment too."

"LPG gas was very expensive so I thought I would be a volunteer and try something cheaper, not only that but I am doing my bit for the environment too," said Joyce.

Rob Taylor, asset manager at Festival Housing, is very excited about the new technology.

He said: "Reducing heating bills for our residents and being environmentally friendly is a winning combination for us here at Festival.

"Mrs Sheppard is the first resident to have one of the ASHPs installed and we hope her bills will be reduced by at least fifty per cent. We are now looking at many other energy technologies, such as solar panels and wind turbines - as well as the ASHP - and hope to be installing them in to a home near you soon."
