With this Summer being a well and true washout and events being cancelled left right and centre,. Worcester residents might be looking for something a little more reliable to keep themselves amused during the warmer months, but also stay dry.

St John's Library is holding a series of activities and events over the next few weeks to keep all ages entertained. From the Munglers to Coffee Mornings, there is something for everyone.

The Munglers arrived at St John's Library on the 4 August and right through until the 8 September children are invited to the library every Saturday between 10am and 12 noon to swap and play the popular top trumps card game.

Mungler trump cards are collected by children who participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. Munglers are characters created by children's author Guy Bass, these little monsters can be compared on strength, size, speed, smell and scariness, and have become a popular favourite with children since their creation in 2010.

Continuing on the Monster theme, children aged 4 years plus are invited to come and listen to Monster Storytime from 3pm next Tuesday (14 August) on the promise to not give them nightmares.

Later in the month St John's Library will host Worcester Literary Festival Coffee Morning between 9:30 am and 1pm on Wednesday 22 August, which will include a tombola, raffle and loads of other fun prizes.

Maggie Doyle (Worcestershire's Poet Laureate) will also be joining attendees from 10am to read a monster related story, for the youngsters of the group. She will also be running a children's workshop on how to write good stories, and launch the children's competition to write a scary monster story. Prizes for the scariest stories  include £20 for 1st prize, £10 for 2nd and 3rd) sponsored by the St John's Library Coffee Pot Club will be presented at our Summer Reading Challenge Awards Ceremony on the 25th September.

The winning entries will also be entered into a national competition, with the winning entrants receiving books signed by the creator of the Mungler cards, plus other goodies.

Paul Etheridge, Library Manager at St John's Library, said: "We're looking forward to welcoming families to St. John's Library for this event. It is also the perfect opportunity for children aged between four and 12 years old to join Story Lab, this year's Summer Reading Challenge. The challenge is simple - to read six library books over the summer holidays. Every child who completes the challenge will get a medal presented to them at the library. It's great fun and what's more, it's free!"
