DODFORD First School children joined a national road safety campaign urging drivers to be mindful of them on narrow country lanes.

Children made posters and walked along lanes outside their school on the busy country road Fockbury Lane.

Headteacher Lisa Parkes said: "The school council displayed posters on the lanes surrounding the school asking drivers to slow down and be mindful of children using the narrow footpaths.

"Each of the three classes went out in turn to walk along the lanes, spotting potential hazards and how they could enjoy a walk along a country lane without fear of road traffic."

The event on June 14 was part of the nationwide Brake Kids Walk, which aims to make roads safer for children.

Dave Nichols, community engagement manager for Brake, said: “It is every child's right to be able to walk in their community without fear of traffic and pollution.

"But many kids are unable to do so because they don’t have access to simple measures such as footpaths, cycle paths and safe places to cross.

"Many more have to contend with fast traffic and pollution from vehicle emissions.

"If we want more children and their families to walk in the West Midlands, then we need to make sure their journeys are safe."

More than 100,000 children from schools across the country took part in the initiative.

Dodford children also brought in their loose change to donate to Brake, raising £43.
