THE embattled HMP Hewell is currently recruiting prison officers.

The Tardebigge prison, which in the past has been named and shamed as the worst prison in the West Midlands for its suicide rate and criticised for its levels of violence, is after people to become prison officers.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Justice admitted working in a prison is no ordinary job.

"Day to day, you’ll help to create a safe, secure prison environment where rehabilitation is supported and encouraged," they said.

"In return you’ll receive a secure job and satisfying career, with great training, excellent benefits and the chance to change lives for the better.

"The starting salary for prison officers at HMP Hewell is £22,396 (based on 39 hours and including any additional allowance), with potential to earn more depending on contract hours and overtime. You will also be entitled to a range of benefits including a Civil Service pension, 25 days holiday, retail discounts and childcare vouchers."

They added: "There’s no such thing as a typical prison officer – the range of experiences and backgrounds our officers have make prisons a great place to work. We’re looking for capable, confident people to join the team, who are good communicators and looking for a career to bring out their best."

All new prison officers receive 12 weeks training and a Level 3 diploma when they start the job.

Anyone thinking about it must have common sense, good people skills, strength of character, and be reliable and responsible.

There are opportunities to achieve training, professional qualifications, and career progression with some officers at Hewell going on to train and work in healthcare units, with vulnerable prisoners, and as physical education instructors or even as dog handlers.
