A NEW reading initiative has been launched at South Bromsgrove School, designed to improve students' reading abilities.

'Drop Everything and Read' is a whole-school programme, which involves pupils and teachers dedicating their Monday PSD lesson to quiet reading.

Students can bring in their favourite book, borrow one from the school's hub or grab one from a 'book box' found in every classroom.

English and literacy coordinator Adele Croft said: "Not only is South buzzing about books during PSD time, English language lessons are now even more exciting than ever, with year nine students having the opportunity to read their Accelerated Reading book and take quizzes whenever they finish their book.

"Students achieving above 80 per cent on each quiz are entered into a half-termly draw and join our magnificent ‘Tree of fame’ display in the hub."

Year nine student Jayme Allen added: "Reading always helps me to clear my mind and avoid stress."
