PARENTS from a support group in Bromsgrove have called for more to be done to “fight the injustice and disability discrimination” against children with hidden disabilities.

The call was made by members of North Worcestershire Autism Parents Support Group during a visit from Conservative candidate for Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid.

A spokesman said: “There is a lack of support, provision, knowledge and understanding within Worcestershire for children and young adults with complex neurological conditions.

“This includes local authority services, the NHS and support services for children and their families.

“This leads to long-term consequences which impact on our children's education, mental health and future.

“The group welcomed Sajid's support and would welcome the support of the local community to also fight the injustice and disability discrimination experienced by these children with hidden disabilities.”

An independent report to the Government about Worcestershire County Council's children's services, which Ofsted graded 'inadequate' in January, will be published on June 8.

County council director of Children, Families and Communities Catherine Driscoll said: “Children are at the heart of everything we do here at Worcestershire County Council.

“Since the Ofsted inspection, we've continued to implement our Children's Improvement Plan which focusses on children and families and addressing their needs.

"There are a significant number of services available across health and social care – both children's and adults. We also have an existing autism strategy that is regularly reviewed.

"Across our Children, Families and Communities directorate we are currently conducting a review of a number of aspects of services for children with disabilities, and recently held a workshop for parents, carers, professionals and organisations to discuss current service provision and ways in which it could be improved.

"The review will take place throughout this year and will include reviews of short break provision, our wider service offer for children with disabilities, transport and education provision.

"Officers are currently visiting and talking with a number of groups and organisations gathering views and if any parent would like to be involved they should contact earlyhelp@worcestershire.gov.uk."
