A BROMSGROVE beauty hopes to become a positive role model for young women across the region if she is crowned Miss Birmingham 2017 on Sunday.

Nursery worker Amy Jones, of Central Road, has been selected from more than a thousand entries to make the final at the Burlington Hotel, alongside 32 other hopefuls.

The 20-year-old, who is also raising money for two charities, aims to challenge negative perceptions of pageants and help promote body positivity among young women.

The former South Bromsgrove High School student said: “People can have a really negative view on pageants but there is a lot more to it than looking pretty and putting on a dress.

“A big part of it is also doing work for charity.

“I am doing a sponsored 'sleep out' on the streets of Bromsgrove on May 28 and I am hoping to raise about £250 for Beauty with a Purpose and homelessness charity Crisis.

“Homelessness is something that really troubles me and if you look at Birmingham for instance it is something that has gone up since 2015.

“I also hope that if I win I can be a positive role model for young women in the city and help promote body positivity.

“I have had a lot of support from my friends and family so far, so I’m really excited.”

The annual competition is open to young women aged between 16 and 26 from in and around Birmingham.

Amy is counting on support from fellow Bromsgrove residents to help push her to the title on Sunday, as votes from the public act as one judge on the panel.

As well as becoming this year’s Miss Birmingham, the winner will also represent the city in the national final of Miss England on Friday, July 14.
