ELDERLY residents at a Bromsgrove care home are sticking to their New Year's resolutions to keep fit, by taking part in an armchair exercise class and learning to make soup.

On Wednesday (January 18), Breme Care Home hosted a morning fitness class, where residents were encouraged to take part in light exercises to help improve their mobility.

Later in the day, residents peeled, sliced and diced a sackful of carrots, onions, swede, courgettes and other winter vegetables before learning how to transform them into a thick homemade soup.

85-year-old resident Cynthia Daniels said: "It was a lovely day, I especially enjoyed making the soup and preparing all the vegetables, it look me back to when I used to do similar meals for my family.”

The wellbeing day was organised by Sanctuary Care, who run the home, to show residents a few fun ways to stick to a healthy diet.

Home manager Rebecca Rudge said: "We are very health conscious here so thought what better way to promote the fun and easy ways to live well – especially as many people will be trying to stick to New Year’s resolutions this time of year.

“Eating healthy often has a bad reputation for being boring and we wanted to change this - we wanted to show everyone that if we can do it so can you.”

Care home resident Patrick Maddox, 83, added: "It’s great to support a healthy wellbeing day – it’s a great time to start, what with the New Year.”
