AN extra £700,000 will be borrowed by Bromsgrove District Council to fund the build of the town's new Dolphin leisure centre, the council has agreed.

Despite objections by Councillor Christopher Bloore, the plans were given the go ahead at a full council meeting on Thursday, June 9.

Councillor Bloore's suggestion that the project be put on hold, so that a full review could be carried out, was defeated 16 to 11 by Conservative councillors.

Conservatives argued that a delay could see costs increase even further and put the whole project at risk.

A proposal to borrow the cash from the 50-year Public Works Loan was also voted in 16 to 11, with Labour councillors voting against the bid.

The £13 million quote originally given to the council shot up last month due to unforeseen costs and inflation in the building industry.

The new leisure centre is scheduled to be completed in late Autumn of 2017, and will feature a swimming pool, dance studios, group cycling studio and a steam room and sauna.
