SOUTH Bromsgrove has joined a prestigious group of schools who have been awarded the International Schools Award.

The award celebrates outstanding achievement in the international dimension of the curriculum and is the culmination of three years of work at school.

The award celebrates outstanding achievement in the international dimension of the curriculum such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering international links is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.

South Bromsgrove’s international work includes long standing reciprocal teacher visits from a partner school in Tanzania and, in October, staff and students welcomed for the first time two students, Johnson and Prince, from The New Life School in Arusha.

The High school also maintains links with many European countries including France. Germany, Poland and Italy.

After receiving the award in London, Paul Topping, headteacher, said: "We take our responsibilities in fostering students’ cultural and social awareness and encouraging equal opportunity and diversity very seriously, and I am delighted the work of our teachers, support staff and students has been recognised through this award.

"The recent tragic events in Paris provided a poignant reminder at the presentation of the importance of solidarity with educators and students in other countries."

British Council chief executive, Sir Ciarán Devane, said: "The school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious award. Adding an international dimension to children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful future careers in an increasingly global economy."

International Development Secretary Justine Greening added: “Young people must be at the heart of our work to create a safer and more prosperous world for everyone and that is why I am delighted to celebrate the international work of South Bromsgrove High and the energy and passion of the young people involved."
