BROMSGROVE people are being urged to nominate community heroes who make a difference to those around them for an award.

The winners could follow in the footsteps of Pc Ian Northcott, from Bromsgrove - nicknamed the "Busking Bobby" - who earlier this year won a "Halifax Giving Extra" award for his project "Socks and Chocs" project.

The bank's third annual awards, which have now been launched, will give £300 in bonus bond vouchers to 66 winners across the country to recognise the work they do for others in their community.

And seven overall regional winners will get a grant of £5,000 to support their community projects.

Pc Northcott's winning project, which he founded in 2010, gives out socks, chocolates and sleeping bags to homeless people in Birmingham.

He earned his nickname when he was on duty one day and performed an impromptu version of "Wonderwall", by Oasis, with a busker and it was viewed thousands of times on Youtube.

At the time he collected his award of £300 in bonus bond vouchers, Pc Northcott said it would help the charity to buy some sleeping bags for those in need.

Halifax Community Bank managing director Russell Galley said: "Stories of our winners from the last two years have been amazing and inspirational.

"We have received thousands of nominations for people who work tirelessly to support their communities over the years and look forward to hearing about even more."

Nominations can be made in the local branch or online at halifax.co.uk/givingextraawards until November 8.
