A DIRECTOR from a Bromsgrove-based fostering agency is in the running for a top national award for his work in children's services.

John Platt, from Fostering People, in Hanbury Road, has been picked as a finalist in the Team Leader of the Year (children's services) category at the Social Worker of the Year awards.

Mr Platt, who has worked at the agency since 2008, achieved his social work qualification 24 years ago and has worked in children's services for both local authorities and independent fostering organisations ever since.

He is one of 68 finalists in 15 categories in the awards - and one will be named "Overall Social Worker of the Year 2015".

“It is a huge honour to be recognised for this award," said Mr Platt.

"It’s a massive team effort at Fostering People so it’s an honour for the whole of the fostering agency – foster carers and staff.

"Making a difference to the lives of children in our care can’t be done by one individual but by everyone working together.

"I’d like to thank the tireless work of our foster carers and the people who support them – the staff at Fostering People and the local authority staff as well.”

Andrew Ireland, corporate director of social care, health and wellbeing at award sponsor Kent County Council, said: “This award recognises an outstanding team leader in children’s social care, someone who is dedicated to their team and consistently makes a positive difference to the lives of the children and families they support.

"To reach the finals is an outstanding achievement and something to be very proud of.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London in November.
