DOCTORS are urging people aged 65 and over as well as those in at risk groups to make sure they get their flu vaccination this winter.

Anyone aged 65 is being told to contact their GP practice to arrange for a free annual flu vaccine.

People 65 and over are more likely to become seriously ill if they develop flu, and are at increased risk of complications such as pneumonia if not vaccinated.

Other groups of people at increased risk of developing complications from flu are pregnant women and people with long term health conditions such as asthma and diabetes.

Young children aged two, three and four years old, and children in schools years one and two are also encouraged to get the vaccine.

Dr Jonathan Wells, chairman and clinical lead for NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s important that as many people as possible get vaccinated to help stop the spread of flu.

“Flu is not just a bad cold. It can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses, especially for the elderly, for which hospital admission may be required.

“The flu vaccine is free, safe and offers protection for a whole year. If you are eligible for the vaccine, please contact your GP surgery and book in for your vaccination as soon as you can.”
