BROMSGROVE residents are being asked to share their views on council plans to develop outdoor café areas.

District councillors want to hear from people who are likely to be affected by the policy including high street businesses, shops, shoppers and market traders.

The High Street has been redesigned to accommodate areas for outdoor seating and these would be allocated on the main pedestrian route.

The current proposals will not apply to the side streets of Chapel Walk, Mill Lane and Church Street.

As part of the plans, the council has developed a street amenity policy, a set of rules outlining details including where tables could be placed and how it will ensure cleanliness, should the plans go ahead.

Once adopted, the scheme will be run by Worcestershire Regulatory Services on behalf of the district.

Rita Dent, the portfolio holder for the town centre, said: “The Council wants to take over the licensing powers for the High Street to adopt a consistent and local approach. This is why it’s important that local traders and businesses have their say on the policy at this early stage.

“The café culture is really taking off and it is great to see so many people sitting outside and enjoying food and drink in such a relaxed and sociable style.

“But it is important that pedestrians can still easily access the High Street and its shops and eateries and that outside dining continues to be a highlight of our town – not an eyesore.”

The power to license street cafés currently sits with Worcestershire County Council but the district council is proposing to take this on.
