A GROUP of charitable volunteers took part in an eight mile sponsored trek from the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bromsgrove to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

On Sunday, October 26, around 15 nurses and midwives, alongside their husbands and family members, participated in the challenge.

The four-hour walk raised more than £1,000 for the Chris Winters Pancreatic Cancer Appeal Fund and saw grow adults dressed as babies, nurses and doctors.

Chris Winters, aged 56, from Bromsgrove has terminal pancreatic cancer and needs palliative chemotherapy in order to prolong his life.

The type of treatment recommended to Chris is not funded by the NHS.

Karen Woodall, event organiser and midwife, said: “The event went well and many people stopped their cars and gave us a donation. The route took us past the area where Chris lives and local people who are aware of his situation showed their support.

"It was a great success not just in terms of the money raised but also for the level of awareness of Chris' situation and of pancreatic cancer in general.

"I would like to thank everyone who participated in the walk and to everyone who has sponsored us.

"We have exceeded all of our targets and expectations and we are likely to have raised over £1000. I am amazed by peoples' generosity and again thank you to the people of Bromsgrove and Redditch who cheered us on."

Karen heard about Chris’ story through articles on TV and local radio which explained how he and his family need to raise the funds to buy the necessary drugs for his treatment.

Some of Chris' relatives also joined the team on the walk.
