BROMSGROVE has successfully retained its status as a fairtrade town.

The Fairtrade Foundation assessed its application and awarded the certificate which means the status will be held until September 2016.

The status is applied for by citizens of a town, self proclaiming their region as one that complies with Fairtrade criteria.

The Fairtrade Bromsgrove group successfully applied on behalf of the town, and in awarding the status the foundation praised the group's use of social media to promote Fairtrade, including a poster competition involving local schools.

It was also impressed that the group had recruited Bromsgrove District Housing Trust as a Fairtrade supporter.

Barbra Hayes, from Fairtrade Bromsgrove, said: “We are delighted that our status has been renewed for another two years.

"We have an exciting action plan in place to deliver our objectives which includes recruiting new business supporters and developing a county wide network of Fairtrade Towns."

The news was celebrated at the Fairtrade autumn fair, held at the Methodist Centre over the weekend, which was opened by town MP Sajid Javid.
