STROKE survivors from the Life After Stroke Centre in Bromsgrove took part in a canal boat trip thanks to generous contributions from Anglo Welsh and the Bromsgrove Lions

On Wednesday, September 24, the stroke survivors were joined their families and volunteers for a trip on Anglo Welsh’s day boat Emma, along the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

They enjoyed a picnic lunch at Tardebigge Wharf, courtesy of the Bromsgrove Lions Club, a charitable organisation which raises money for worthy causes.

The trips lasted for two hours each with the groups travelling to Alvechurch and back.

Matt Anderson, manager of the Anglo Welsh Tardebigge base, said: “Canals are great places to escape to – the slow pace of travel on a canal boat and the wildlife to watch out for along the way, really helps people to relax. We are looking forward to taking the Stroke Association’s ‘Wednesday Friends’ group for a day out together on the canal.”

Johanne Hughes, from the Life After Stroke Centre in Bromsgrove, said: “We are so thankful to Anglo Welsh and the Bromsgrove Lions for all their support. A wonderful day trip like this will mean so much to our fantastic volunteers, stroke survivors and their families who are part of Wednesday Friends group.

“A stroke can have a huge impact on someone’s life, and our Wednesday Friends group is an example of one of the peer support groups we provide at the Life After Stroke Centre. The group really demonstrates the power of stroke survivors and their families supporting and inspiring one another, so we are grateful they can share this great experience.”

Keith Godwin from the Bromsgrove Lions, said: "We are so pleased to have been able to offer the volunteers and stroke survivors from the Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Centre a day out on the canals as a special treat, thanks to Anglo Welsh. It’s a great opportunity to step away from the stresses of everyday life and relax, chugging gently through the countryside."

Anglo Welsh is one of the largest canal boat holiday companies in the UK with 12 bases across England and Wales.
