YOUNGSTERS have been enjoying specially organised canal trips on the county's waterways.
Two groups of seven young carers from across Worcestershire, aged between seven and 15-years-old, enjoyed a well-earned break as they travelled along the Worcester and Birmingham Canal aboard the 36 foot long day boat, Emma.
The two-hour trips were organised by Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays and Lions Club Bromsgrove, being supported by Rubery's Morrisons supermarket.
The groups travelled from Alvechurch and back, enjoying a picnic lunch at Tardebigge Wharf .
Worcestershire Young Carers is a scheme working with children and young people aged up to 25-years-old, providing them support and assistance as they care for a family member.
Mary Lewis, leader team manager of the Worcestershire Young Carers, said: "These are children and young people with a lot of responsibilities on young shoulders, so the canal boat trip is a splendid opportunity for them to relax and enjoy an activity that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.
"I would like to thank all those involved for this wonderful gift, I am sure the young carers will have a fantastic time.”
Keith Godwin, of the Bromsgrove Lions, said: "When we were given the opportunity to take groups on Emma for a day trip, we immediately thought of the young carers in our area. They are a very deserving group of young people and we were pleased to offer them this day out as a special treat."
Youngsters from Tardebigge First School also had the chance to take a trip on the boat.
During the 30-minute trip, the year two pupils enjoyed a walk where they learned about the history of the canal and the wildlife that lives there.
Matt Anderson, manager of the Anglo Welsh Tardebigge base, added: “Canals are wonderful places for children to visit.
"Travelling at just 4 mph, it’s definitely the fastest way to slow down and take a break."
