POLICE in Droitwich are urging people to call them straight away if they see any suspicious activity in the town, rather than leaving it until later on.

The plea comes after a number of cars were broken into in Burrish Street, but a sighting of a man shining a torch into car windows when the offences are believed to have happened, was not reported to police at the time.

Two cars had their windows smashed overnight on Sunday, October 7 in order to steal items including a sat nav and mobile phone accessories.

A man was witnessed in the area using a torch to look into vehicles at around 2.30am on Monday, October 8, however this was not reported to police until 11am that day.

Detective Constable Stuart Mitchinson said: "While we appreciate that this has been reported to us in the first place - as it gives us an indication of when these crimes may have taken place and how they were committed - it would have been better if we had received the report of the man with the torch when he was seen in the area.

"We believe it is likely that this is the man who was responsible for the car break-ins on Burrish Street - who legitimately goes looking through car windows in the early hours of the morning?

"If we had been called at the time, then we could have responded and tried to find the man to see what he was up to. This may have led to us making an arrest or even preventing the crimes from happening on the first place.

"I understand that many people, especially the elderly, may feel that they don't want to bother us in the early hours of the morning, but that is exactly what we're here for.

"Our control room is staffed 24 hours a day and you can call us anytime on 101 if you see anything suspicious or 999 if you think it's a crime in progress."
