LOWER Smite Farm near Droitwich is playing host to a group of enthusiastic volunteers next month in an effort to help maintain the gardens more effectively.

Worcestershire Wildlife Trust is hoping to show people how to garden in a more wildlife-friendly way.

The cottage garden and vegetable plot at lower Smite Farm are used by local schools and community groups to help teach everything from the importance of planting for wildlife, to the life cycle of various plants and the benefits of growing your own food.

Debs Richardson Bull, education officer for the trust, said: “Our volunteer taster days are a great way for people who may be interested in volunteering to come along, meet the team and learn more about what’s involved.

“On our day in October we’ll be having a bit of a blitz in the garden and converted farm yard so it’s a great opportunity to make new friends, work in a team and help shape the future of the garden.

“You don’t need experience and knowledge to join in, although it would be great if you do. We’re looking for people who are keen to help wildlife, enjoy being outside and would like to be part of a like-minded team.

“Volunteering can be hard work but it’s invariably fun and enjoyable. We’ll have biscuits, cups of tea and lots of advice and encouragement on hand to make the day fly past.”

The free taster day is taking place on Wednesday, October 17 between 10am and 3pm. No previous experience is necessary and all tools and instruction will be provided. Participants should wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear and bring a packed lunch.
