THE Droitwich branch of the Royal British Legion has given up the financial burden of its club facility in the town.

The venue in Salwarpe Road will no longer be the official home of the Spa’s Royal British Legion organisation after all committee and club members stepped down on Sunday, September 2.

The decision was taken to no longer run the site due to financial reasons.

Instead the keys have been handed over to Cannon Royal Brewery so the building can be opened as a public house.

However, the town’s branch of the legion will still be in operation and will continue to organise the annual poppy appeal and Remembrance Day activities.

Former club treasurer Larry James said: “The club facility is not used enough by our members for us to keep it going. It is a sad day because the club has been there for many years.

“We will now be leasing the building to a brewery so it can be run as just a pub. The branch will still use the site and all bookings are being honoured as well.

“Even though we won’t be running it any longer, the facility will still be there and the British Legion branch will continue its work.”

Former club chairman, Alan Evans, said: “I would like to thank the club committee, members and staff for all their support in trying to keep the club operating and would urge Droitwich residents to continue to help the British Legion branch and the new venture in Salwarpe Road.”
