DRIVERS are being urged to take extra care as children head back to school following the summer break.

With children heading back to the classrooms, Worcestershire County Council is once again reminding drivers in Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch to pay attention when school crossing patrol staff are helping pupils cross safely.

The awareness campaign is being increased at the start of the autumn term thanks to the work of seven-year-old Tom Roberts, who has designed a poster which will be placed near schools across the county to help get the important message across to motorists.

The youngster decided to focus on the work of the School Crossing Patrol (SCP) service during a project last term looking at people that help their communities.

Posters, which show the 'Four Pole Positions' detailed in the Highway Code, will be on display at locations across Worcestershire that have experienced failure to stop incidents.

Councillor John Smith OBE, County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "It always amazes people when we tell them there are still irresponsible motorists out there that place lives in danger by ignoring the instructions of the dedicated crossing patrols. Thankfully these drivers are in the minority but, unfortunately, incidents still occur regularly.”
