A SPORTY student from Worcester will find himself at the centre of the world’s attention tonight when he helps to hand over an Olympic gold medal to the world’s fastest man.

As previously reported by your Worcester News, Alex Donaldson of St John’s landed the prestigious role of medalbearer for the men’s 100m sprint final at the London 2012 Games.

He then received the news that he would be the one with the honour of carrying the gold medal of Jamaican superstar sprinter Usain Bolt, who won the race in spectacular style last night.

Speaking to the Worcester News before the presentation, the 22-year-old said he hoped he would have the chance to congratulate Bolt on his win.

He said: “I managed to get into the stadium on Sunday night and watch the final. Those 10 seconds were probably the best thing I’ve ever seen. It was electric.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out I would be carrying the gold medal. I’m so fortunate to be chosen to be one of the three to go up.

“I’ll be really focusing on not tripping up and trying to do my country proud.”

Mr Donaldson has already performed medal bearing duties for competitiors in the judo after he was picked to be one of 80,000 volunteers playing their part to ensure the world’s biggest sporting event runs smoothly.

The 100m final victory ceremony is set to take place at about 7.30pm.
