PROPOSALS to build around 23,000 new homes across the south of the county came under fierce criticism last night - with fears it could turn Worcester into a "dormitory town".

Councillors across Worcester, Malvern and Wychavon all agreed to send out the South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP) for a fresh consultation over various changes planned to it.

It includes extra employment land at key sites around the county, and more homes on disused sites.

In Worcester, former city council deputy leader Roger Knight said the proposed numbers of homes would damage the south of the city, adding: "You don't build new houses for local people next to a motorway."

Labour Councillor Richard Boorn said it was like being asked "do you want to be shot in the head or stabbed in the heart."

The city's Liberal Democrat and Green Party councillors refused to cast a vote over the document, citing worries over a lack of infrastrucure and environmental concerns.

Over in Malvern the district council spent three-and-a-half hours debating the SWDP, before agreeing the next stage.
