A YOUNGSTER who had a major operation to help him walk is celebrating after another fund-raising boost.

Ben Gannon, aged eight, who suffers from quadraplegic cerebral palsy, went to America last year for groundbreaking surgery.

Well-wishers raised more than £37,000 for the youngster, who lives in Malvern, to have the operation.

Royal Rogues Dragon Boat Racing Team are the latest in a long line of supporters who have raised money for his appeal.

They have donated about £350 from a Facebook wedding fair raffle and Race the Dragon, a charity regatta held in Worcester.

Since Ben’s operation about a year ago he has been horseriding, having intensive physiotherapy as well as using a treadmill and his trike to build up mobility and help him walk unaided.

Mum Lorraine Gannon said: “Ben is doing very well and continues to progress.

“The journey is slower than we would have liked but isn’t that the case when you are watching for every small change?

“Ben has looser legs and now can make steps easier, his trunk is more flexible too.

“He is the same as every other boy when he wants to play army, pirates and Robin Hood, and we strive to make Ben a confident walking frame user.

“We would hope to see more improvements for the next 12 months, and we are looking for a private physiotherapist to be able to continue on our progress to date.

“If you think you have the skills, perhaps with some experience and can fit around Ben's school times, then we would love to hear from you.”
