AN important collection of natural artefacts housed at the Worcester City Museum has been shown to a lucky few people during tours to the underground stores.

The tours ran for three days and were led by collections officer Garston Phillips who showed guests around the basement facility.

Mr Phillips, who has more than 40 years’ experience of working with the collection, said the tours were a way of showing visitors some of the artefacts not on display.

“The collection is the oldest part of the museum and goes back to the 1830s. It is quite an important part of Worcester’s history,” he said.

“There is the albatross and the sturgeon on display upstairs and soon some of the wet specimens, like the one in the picture, will also be on display.”

“With the library moving we want people to know that the museum and art gallery is still here and open for the public to enjoy. We have an important collection which Worcester should be proud of.”

Despite the tours ending earlier this month, anyone who is interested in a specific artefact can contact the museum on 01905 25371 and they may be able to accommodate viewing requests.
