THE site of a neglected former pub in Upton-upon-Severn could be redeveloped for housing.

But the proposals do not include any plans to restore the 18th century pub.

The Royal Oak was converted into two flats in the early 1970s, but the site is currently empty and in a poor state.

Now, Malvern Hills District Council has rec-eived a planning application to build two new two-bedroom houses in a yard behind the former pub.

Planning agent Ian Guest and Associates, acting on behalf of applicants Sarah Hearn and Helen Fether-stonhaugh, of London, say it would cost too much to refurbish the former pub – something which would not be economically viable for two flats.

Upton Town Council’s planning committee has welcomed funds being earmarked for the property, but says it is dismayed that no restoration of the main building is included in the proposals.

Members say they will only give their backing to the scheme if it is amended to include plans for restoration.

The council has also received letters from local residents with the same concerns and has set a target date of Tuesday, July 10, to decide the application.
