THE Jubilee was not the only diamond celebration going on in Malvern this week.

On Monday, Malvern Link couple Ronald and June Hunt celebrated 60 years of marriage.

With their silver and golden anniversaries also coinciding with jubilee celebrations Mrs Hunt said she had grown quite accustomed to sharing the limelight with the Queen on their big day.

“Although I don’t think that she knows that she shares it with us,” she added.

The couple, who are both 82, met in Worcester, where Mrs Hunt had grown up and where Mr Hunt had moved to from South Wales with his parents when he was three.

“We were both out walking with groups of friends and we met at a stile and got chatting and that was it,” said Mrs Hunt.

They married at St Martin’s Church, London Road, and stayed in Worcester for about a decade before moving to Willow Grove, where they have lived since 1963.

Mr Hunt started his career working on the footplates for Great Western Railways before being conscripted in 1948 and serving 21 months with the Royal Engineers, mostly in Egypt.

After leaving the forces he worked in various jobs in local factories.

Mrs Hunt started in local government before taking a break to raise their three sons, David, Kevin and Simon, later returning to work as a legal secretary.

They have also been loyal servants to the Scouting movement, serving as leaders for the First Malvern Link Cub pack for 25 years as well as helping out with the Scouts and Venture Scouts.

The couple, who have four grandchildren, were both keen singers before throat problems forced them to give it up.

Both were members of Malvern Singers, while Mr Hunt was part of the Worcester Male Voice Choir and Mrs Hunt sang with Colwall Ladies Choir.

After spending Monday together they enjoyed a celebration lunch on Wednesday with friends and family.

Mrs Hunt said she could not believe that 60 years had gone by since their wedding, and attributed their successful marriage to “tolerance, give and take, and being very good friends.”
