THE first phase of the multi-million pound regeneration of a Worcester estate can now begin.

Worcester Community Housing (WCH) has appointed Lovell as contractors to build 23 two-bed flats, 29 parking bays and a grassed garden area on the site of the former Drakes Drum pub in Tudor Way, Dines Green.

The £3 million scheme signals the start of WCH’s plans to spend £12 million redeveloping the Dines Green estate. Work will begin at the end of July or start of August and will last for 12 months.

Bill Tebay, property services director at WCH, said: “The appointment of Lovell is really good news. The site will soon be operational and preparation work is progressing well.

“We appointed Lovell because of their excellent track record and extensive experience. We look forward to working with them to deliver high quality, value-for-money affordable homes.”

David Gough, regional director for Lovell, said: “We strive to add value to all the projects that we are involved with and we are looking forward to working in partnership with Worcester Community Housing to make sure they get the highest quality affordable homes.

“Our previous work with WCH has seen excellent results for local people and we look forward to continuing the relationship.”

As well as developing local homes, Lovell will also be developing local skills and have agreed to provide apprenticeships and training for four people working towards NVQ qualifications.

WCH and Lovell will be working closely with the local community throughout construction to provide information and updates on how the scheme is developing.

The proposed second phase of the regeneration scheme will focus on the Gresham Road area and, planning consent permitting, will see the demolition of 14 existing homes, youth centre and church and the development of about 51 homes, retail units, a youth centre and church.

Final plans are currently under development with a view to being submitted to planners by the end of the month.
