ROYAL Mail has confirmed that Droitwich Spa’s delivery office will close as part of the company’s cost cutting measures for the Midlands.

A final decision was announced on Tuesday, October 4 following eight months of consultation with staff and Unions.

The site, based at The Furlongs, Berry Hill Industrial Estate, will be shut as the Droitwich operation moves to Worcester Mail Centre.

Staff members at Droitwich, believed to number around 40, are all expected to be given the chance to relocate to Worcester.

Postal bosses aim to cut the number of people Royal Mail employs in the Midlands by 550 in response to a decline in the number of packages being posted across the country.

Paul Jobling, regional operations director for Royal Mail Midlands, said: “Our company needs to change quickly. We have to reduce our costs at a faster rate than the decline in our revenues. We need to modernise our operations, find new business and focus on our customers.

“We are conscious of the impact this announcement will have on our staff in the Midlands. It is hard to reduce job numbers at any time and we are committed to doing everything we can, in line with our agreement with the CWU, to make these changes on a voluntary basis. We are determined therefore, through our modernisation programme, to continue providing a high quality of service and place the company on a sound, secure and sustainable footing.”

The final decision is another blow to town workers and Berry Hill Industrial Estate. The news comes just days after logistics firm DHL announced the closure of its Droitwich site, which is based at Berry Hill and will affect more than 300 employees.
