HUNDREDS of workers at a Droitwich Spa distribution centre face losing their jobs after it was announced that the site will close.

Logistics firm DHL will shut its Droitwich branch, based at Berry Hill Industrial Estate, in January 2012 with more than 300 jobs being affected.

The town-based operation, which caters for supermarket chain Morrisons, will be moved to a new distribution centre in Somerset.

Staff now face the choice of relocating to Somerset or losing their jobs. DHL will be offering training to those who don’t want to relocate to try to help them find a different job closer to the town.

A spokesman for DHL Supply Chain said: “Approximately 330 jobs at the Berry Hill Estate in Droitwich are affected by the opening of Morrison’s new distribution centre in Bridgwater, Somerset.

“All staff at the site have been offered relocation assistance to the new facility, although we appreciate that not everyone will be able to make the move. For this reason we are also providing outplacement training in conjunction with Dudley College, to help staff secure alternative employment in the Droitwich area.

“While the Berry Hill site will close in January 2012, this decision in no way reflects on the quality of work delivered at the site and we would like to thank staff for their understanding at this time.”
