BLUE food, blue face paint, blue drinks, blues music and even a blue movie – Avatar – will be part of a bid by Westmead Care Home for the elderly in Droitwich to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Blue has been adopted as the official colour for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month during March and The Prostate Cancer Charity has urged the nation to show its support with “Do Blue” fundraising events.

Staff at Westmead Care Home, Westmead Close, decided the sky was the limit when it came to blue-themed ideas.

The home’s catering team will serve up baked blue stilton soup, chicken cordon “blue”, blueberry crumble, blue butterfly cakes and blueberry muffins on Thursday, March 24.

Blue coloured drinks will also be served to blues music by staff dressed in blue and blue flowers will be arranged throughout the home. To cap it all, residents will enjoy a screening of James Cameron’s hit sci-fi movie Avatar, which features blue aliens.

Westmead manager Sue Stokes said: “We wanted to support this worthy cause and so put our heads together to see how far we could take the blue theme.

“Staff have really got into the spirit of things and our catering team proved particularly creative in coming up with a blue menu.

“The main aim is to help draw attention to the seriousness of prostate cancer while also having some fun along the way.

“We hope relatives will come and join us for cake at or coffee on the day.”

A collection tin for donations from visiting family and friends during March has been set up at Westmead with all proceeds going to The Prostate Cancer Charity.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among UK men. According to the charity, 37,000 men are diagnosed with the condition every year.
