I HAVE read the articles (Advertiser, November 1 and 8) about the "corrosive dust" which is causing problems for the residents of Foxcote Close.

From the symptoms mentioned - orange coloured spots on cars and other surfaces - it would seem to be a problem with which I was familiar over many years during my working life as an environmental manager.

If I am right, it is "rust spotting" and is caused by metallic iron particles landing on surfaces.

The particles then rust and with moisture a "glue" is formed attaching the particles to the surfaces, making them rough.

A word of warning - in cases of rust spotting it is not possible to drag the rusted particles from surfaces without damage and I would urge sufferers not to try abrasives.

It is usually possible to remove the spots with a harmless specialised treatment under expert supervision. This dissolves the "glue" attaching the particles to the surfaces.

Processes, which if not properly controlled can generate the airborne iron particles causing rust spotting, are known. This should enable the source of the dust to be traced.

I am quite prepared to discuss the matter with the Environment Agency, which I understand from Redditch Council is investigating the matter.
