Bretforton 1, Portishead Firebrands 1

THE first half of the final league game of the season began with the visitors setting the pace but the home defence held firm and Firebrands were unable to produce any telling shots.

The home soon picked up the pace of the game and produced several attacks culminating in a couple of short corners, one of which produced a solid strike from Sophie Corbett only for it to be disallowed.

Firebrands continued to control the midfield and their attacks also produced short corners, one of which was converted.

The second half was much more open with good play from both teams. Corbett developed into the key distributor for the villagers as she relieved much of the pressure.

Twenty minutes into the second half an attack down the right by Deb Slatter produced a free hit on the Firebrands' 25-yard line. Corbett struck the ball hard into the D for the visiting keeper to clear only as far as Slatter who crossed the ball back into the danger area and Andrea Cole converted to level.

The last 15 minutes continued to produce attacks from both sides but the score remained 1-1.

Bretforton's player of the match was goalkeeper Fiona Baldelli.

THE second team found their form to record an emphatic win to boost their Severn League Division Three title push.

The visitors stamped their authority on matters from the pushback with Kate Mitchell finding the net in the second minute.

A brace from Sarah Bragg quickly made it 3-0 but the hosts hit back before Tracey Hodgkins made it 4-1 at the interval.

Bragg then completed her hat-trick and Lisa Workman then added her name to the scoresheet with a well deserved goal before Hodgkins (2) and Mitchell completed the scoring.

The second string are away again on Saturday with a visit to Cirencester.

Both Bretforton sides will also be competing in the county tournament at Cheltenham.

A difficult match faced the club's juniors against a strong and older Cheltenham team, who dominated the game scoring four times in the first half and a further five in the second.

The busy Bretforton defence battled hard to clear Cheltenham's fast balls with Carly Elwell and Kirsty Evans working well with player of the match goalkeeper Laura Dunsby.

Bretforton kept their fighting spirit going throughout the match and pushed up into the Cheltenham half several times during the second half with good teamwork between sweeper Jade Gaffney, Natasha Ingils and Samantha Trotman.
